Huber Cellars Hafen Dornfelder

$20, available only at the winery
Hafen means harbour or port in German - called such for the same reasons that only sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France can be called Champagne:  By European Union law, only a wine made in the Duro Valley of Portugal may be called port.  Hafen is Huber Cellars clever way of getting around the law and quit a befitting word for this German family made port-style wine.  Prior to making wine, Norm Huber was a carpenter and a rather skilled one - he did the woodwork aboard the Queen Mary 2 when she was refurbished as a hotel.  When he entered the wine industry, old habits die hard and he also made the tasting room bars for Longoria and other local wineries.  Then, he turned his craft towards art, and created a wooden statue of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and agriculture, here represented on their port styled dessert wine label.
As is typical with Huber Cellars' Dornfelders in general, the appearance is ink black, dense, and opaque with a very dark purple at the rim.  With a quick swirl, the unctuous nectar clings to the sides of the glass and drips down like tears from heaven in large, wide lines, as if it were as thick as honey!

With a deep inhalation, the power of this bottle of bliss is immediately evident:  like a gust of wind in the dessert blowing off a gentleman's hat, undeniable aromas of sweet blueberries, black currant, and dark chocolate consume the nostrils with an unexpected fervor and fills the room with its marvelous perfume.
With the anticipation of eager teens to explore their own nature, the calling of the perfume consumes the nose and owns the soul.  Consumption is called forth by an unforeseen force propelling a craving need that can only be quashed with a sip, followed by an out of body experience as the rich, dense, powerful nectar covers the inner mouth with its silky texture, leaving just a little, like honey, as it glides down.  A powerful tsunami of the most delectable flavors inundates the mouth and mind:  Melted dark chocolate boysenberries, blueberry pie, and chocolate slightly melted in espresso bombard the senses...the wine has a finish that will linger long enough to lose sleep and haunt the mind for nights to come!
